After your greeting you’ll be off to explore the island with confidence and aloha knowing the Top 5 things to do on the island.

1. Schedule a Lei Greeting with Lei Greeting Kauai for Your Arrival to the Island

Arriving to the island can become a more welcoming experience when you are greeted with a fresh flower Lei by someone that knows the island inside and out. When you are greeted by Lei Greeting Kauai you not only receive a traditional Hawaiian Lei but you also get the inside scoop on the BEST spots on the island. Our greets are welcoming with big smiles to start your trip to the island perfectly.

Lei Greeting Kauai offers more than just fresh flower lei. We also offer Kukui Nut Lei, picked from Kukui Nut trees local to Hawaii. They are polished and then put onto a silk string to make a lei. We also offer Candy Lei for the little ones so they are satisfied and get a tasty treat as a welcome gift. Lei Greeting Kauai also offers Ti Leaf Lei Greetings. These beautiful, shiny green leaves are made by hand from local ti leaves from Kauai. Ti leaf lei are mostly worn by men but they can also be worn by women as well.

2. Visit the Best Hiking Spots on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii

The Island of Kauai offers some of the best views in the world. Napali Coast in Haena State Park offers multiple hiking options for all capabilities. If a strenuous hike up steep mountains isn't your thing, you’re in luck! Catch an epic sunset after parking at Haena State park and take the flat, wooden walking path to go find the beach. This walking path is a great alternative to a strenuous hike, which you can also do at Haena State Park.

The Kalalau trail at Haena State Park stretches a distance of 15 miles. This hike has steep inclines both up and down and steep drop offs that overlook the ocean. Hike for just one and half miles and you will reach Hanakapiai Beach! A beautiful, secluded place where you can camp and watch the sunrise, take a dip in the ocean in the morning and continue your hike the next day, or hike back out to Haena Beach park.

Another great hiking option for all different people is on the other side of the island about a 2-hour drive from Haena State Park. You will have to drive in a circle, around the entire island and reach Waimea Canyon which also overlooks the Napali Coast. In Waimea Canyon there are multiple parking lots with bathroom facilities and beautiful views that you can easily walk up to and overlook the mountains of the Napali Coast. If you are looking for something more strenuous, there are multiple options for hiking further down into the mountains. Of course, it is important to do your research on these specific hikes and only hike in safe conditions as Kauai is very wet and rainy.

3. Try Camping at Polihale State Park

Polihale state park is a close thirty minutes from the Waimea Canyon, but at the bottom of the mountain. Polihale is a long seven-mile beach that stretches along the south shores of the Island of Kauai. At the end of the beach, you reach a tall mountain that marks the edge of the Napali Coast on the far, northwest side of the island. There are stories of people who have swum around this coast from Haena beach all the way to Polihale Beach.

Camping at Polihale is a beautiful experience on Kauai. On clear nights (which is most) the stars are crisp and clear and you’re almost guaranteed, if you watch long enough to see a shooting star or even two or three. During the day Polihale can be piping hot, sandals are a definite necessity for the scorching sands, until you reach the water which will instantly cool you off. Don’t forget the reef safe sunscreen! Polihale does not have much shade. Being on the far north west, it is a drier area and not as many trees or tropical shade is available on the beach. But you will see different species of cactus and maybe even find a dragon fruit. Bringing a tent or a big umbrella is advisable.

The crystal clear blue waters and the expansiveness of the beach makes it 100% worth visiting and spending the evening, which turns into a crisp, cool starry night.  Most rental cars on the island do NOT allow off-road driving and do not allow driving to Polihale. If you need a rental vehicle for off-road driving there are specific companies and private rentals that can provide that for you.

4. Watch Sea Turtles While Snorkeling at Anini Beach

Seeing a turtle on your trip to Kauai is such an incredible experience. In Hawaiian, a turtle is called a Honu. At Anini beach in Kilauea, snorkeling in the clear waters provide some of the best snorkeling experiences on the island. Turtles are happy here to come and eat off the reef and the rocks. Anini is a long beach with parking spots all along the coast for you to pull off and snorkel at different spots!

5. Get Shaved Ice From any Shaved Ice Shop on the Island

We couldn’t write this blog without adding in a tasty treat. Shaved Ice is a delicacy here in Kauai and a refreshing treat for the whole family and for couples. Shaved ice shops are scattered all over the island so no matter where you decide to visit and explore you can find a shaved ice shop to try this tasty dessert.

Shaved ice was introduced to Hawaii by Japanese expats that had moved to the island in the 1800’s. They shared their own traditional way of cooling themselves down and realized that it was a delicacy everyone wanted to try. The Hawaiians quickly realized this was a refreshing way to cool off and began to offer this to tourists and visitors who were not as accustomed to the heat. Shaved ice is eaten every day by some of the locals, especially during the summer months when there is less rain to cool off the island.

Shaved ice is ice that is blended and shaved down to create a fluffy texture. Sweetened syrup with beautiful colors is then added to the scoop of ice in a specific way. Some ice shops offer patterns with their syrup. You can also choose from different flavors of ice cream to be a surprise, extra treat that is hiding under the ice. Shaved ice comes in cups or plastic cone-shaped bowls to catch any of the melting ice so you can mix it with the ice cream or drink it like a juice.
